SERBIA - National review, No 73
Prologue
Nineteen big ones to one small. Nineteen decorated and buzzing to one bound. Nineteen slanderers to one slandered. Exactly twenty years ago. That much has passed since the aggression of the North Atlantic Treaty against Serbia. Although it would be more precise to say: twenty-four years of aggression. Because this aggression, launched on 4 August 1995 with the attack of the American aviation on Serbian Krajina, continued on 30 August 1995 with the attack on Srpska and on 24 March 1999 on Serbia, and continues to this day. With routine dramaturgical variations. Now we defend ourselves by remembering, with the culture of memory. With wisdom and courage that arise from it. <

RATKO BULATOVIĆ, HERO AND MARTYR FROM 1999
Returnee from the Last Gate
That night, 29-30 April, our traditional friends rocketed the General Headquarters in the center of Belgrade. He, a guard on duty at the City Civil Protection Office, rushed with the team to save the wounded. Carefully calculating the time, the killers came back twelve minutes later and bombed the same place. He lost both legs and the ground underneath. His chances were slim, but he survived. Today we can learn from him how to fight for life and meaning, how faith can move the mountains

ABOVE OLD SLANKAMEN, AT THE TRIPOINT, WHERE THE TISA MEETS THE DANUBE
Triple Touch
It is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in this part of Europe. When you take a photo there, you will see Srem, and Bačka, and Banat on it. Vojvodina is not flat there, the Danube is not wide and straight. You will see remains of the fortress mentioned already in the 11th century, you will receive treatment with saline mineral water, oversee the Šumadija Gate of Belgrade. You will also grasp the old rule: ”Read the map, but ask the peasant”

IN THE NATURAL HISTORYS CENTER IN SVILAJNAC
A Learning Adventure
They say that it is unique in this part of Europe. It was opened in 2015. In addition to the local curators, the exhibition was created by experts from the Natural History Museum and the Faculty of Mining and Geology in Belgrade. Through a series of exhibitions, a lot is learned, from the geological eras of the planet, through meteors, volcanoes, minerals, to various plant and animal species. Of course, dinosaurs attract most attention, especially among children

Around the Town
A BELGRADE ”BOROUGH IN THE MEGALOPOLIS” AND ITS TIMES
All Sorts of Things in Žarkovo
Already in the 19th century, it had its self-government and the status of a municipality, from the Topčider River to Ostružnica, from the Sava to Kneževac and Železnik. For a long time, Žarkovo has not been a ”village near Belgrade”, no matter what they were saying about it in the separated Čukarica. To prove this, the residents of Žarkovo bring out old legends, royal decrees and Matija Ban, and Military Technical Institute, even football. If they didn’t have anything, they wouldn’t be doing it. And this chronicler, a migrant from the city center, put himself in their service

ON THE BISTRICA SPRING IN DONJE LIPOVO, UNDER LUČKA GORA, IN THE FOOT OF SINJAJEVINA
Clear Eye in the Stone
There, on a thousand meters altitude, in the immediate vicinity of Kolašin, everything gives fruit: vegetables and fruit, peony, avocet, daffodil, even people. ”When you drink that water, you feel as if you were reborn.” Life is too short to stay there too long. The Bistrica gives you what you need, it was no accident we were born there. Now an uninvited and ungrateful guest arrived: Progress. Some powerful people, with money, their own and others’, came to enslave and muddy the Bistrica

SERBS AND SERBIAN MONUMENTS IN CONSTANTINOPLE AND EDIRNE
Through the Shadows of Centuries
That symbolically very important city is full of Serbian traces. King Milutin raised the Church of St. John the Forerunner and a hospital for the poor. Despot Đurđe built two towers in the city walls. After the fall of Belgrade in 1521, the population was moved to Constantinople, where the Beligrad-mahala was founded. Ever since those times, the Hospital Gate is called the Beligrad Gate. Very significant were the churches of St. Petka of Serbia and the Virgin of Belgrade. (...) We followed traces

Heritage
A SMALL REMINDER FROM THE HISTORY OF SERBIAN BOOK (2)
Exiting the Drama of Disruption
It was necessary to dive out of the darkness of slavery and dispersion. To return culture to people and people to culture. The Serbian awakening in the XVIII century resembled a miracle. The first printed book of old Serbian literature was published, the first heraldic and calligraphic anthologies, the first Srbljak, the first alphabet book and grammar book, the first novel and autobiography, the first national history and encyclopedia of natural science, the first math book and first book for children, the first magazine… All that was built into the foundation of the uprising and resurrection of Serbia

ON THE OCCASION OF THE RECENT EXHIBITION OF PAINTER MARKO ČELEBONOVIĆ (1902–1986)
Towards the Lights of Poetic Realism
He was master of the civic world poetics, perhaps the last important one on the European horizon. The poetics of the world that disappeared in Eastern Europe with the arrival of communism and transition and in the West with postmodern frivolity, equaling high and popular culture, as well as the destruction of the middle class. He passed a refined way from intimism between the two wars to the most refined of all realisms and from dark paintings to whiteness

MILICA NIKOLIĆ, A RISING STAR OF SERBIAN JUDO
To the Meaning through Fight
For seventeen years, the Serbian women’s judo was waiting for that medal that she brought from Tel Aviv in 2018. This brave and self-conscious girl knows what kind of journey she has embarked on. Gifts on that road are sometimes bitter, but they are always useful. She sees numerous traps in this era and is completely focused on judo. Whoever is not ready to improve themselves cannot help the world. Without fear, there is no courage. If you are not aware of the danger, you are not big enough to stand up to it
